Our thriller would be distributed by a small independent studio with good equipment but a low budget called CANDI studios. it is our colleges media institution which provides training and equipment for low budget film makers. places it will be released on will be things such as vimeo, blogger and facebook. we will also have a cinema screening to collate valuable feedback from other film makers in order to improve our film making skills in the future. moreover, people such as our family and friends will also see it on a dvd copy that we will receive.

The internet has been used to launch the short thriller opening to a wider audience, this thriller opening has has 326 views which means that they were able to get more feedback. We are currently in the process of putting our thriller opening also on youtube but we have started off with facebook where only our friends and family are able to see but also vimeo which is accessible to anyone. 

This thriller opening has a lot more views and has valuable feedback. Also other media students have begun comparing theirs in the comments in order to progress in their filming skills and to also be able to target a wider audience.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Lauren is a 22 year old studying english, psychology and media. She loves going to the movies and socialising with new people. She also enjoys clubbing  and the dance art itself. She's very fashionable and takes good care of herself. She enjoys reading non fiction books about people who have had bad experiences and have been affected psychologically, such as the book 'UGLY' and 'DAMAGED'.

How does your media product represent the particular social groups?

Our protagonist is not the usual representation of a ballet dancer. Out main aim was to establish normality then convey her flaws through the old, abandoned mise en scene and dark setting. 

The drop indicates that all not is well and foreshadows what will happen in the film. The drop is also a metaphor for her life as after she drops things immediately begin to go wrong and thats when the scenes of her scars are revealed. 

We chose to challenge the usual stereotypical 'crazy person' as we thought it was effective if we had a normal person to show that you do not have to be visually abnormal. Similarly in Black Swan the main character is a dancer who looks normal. 

We used lighting on her face to emphasis her features and to also create shadows adding to the tension of the film. Her costume was very childish we chose this specifically to present her as immature mentally, however this is contrasted with the lipstick used as lipstick has connotations of sophistication and a mature look. This arouses the audiences curiosity and eagerness into watching more to reveal what happens. We ensure we did this successfully as the opening is what sets the bar for expectation and also ensures that the audience stays for the whole 90minutes if the film.

How does my media product develop forms and conventions of real media products?


My groups main inspiration for our title sequence was Seven. We thought that the flickery white titles were very effective as they brought a sense of spookiness hence why we included this technique in our thriller opening.

These two shots are when the titles of both Seven and Victoria appear. As you can see they are very similar and the reason for this is so our audience can establish the genre/sub genre as audiences usually identify with the films genre/sub genre when intertextuality is used.

We also used the usual title sequence as used in seven.

Although most films have a font consistency in their title sequence, we did not intentionally challenge this, however the title 'Victoria' was a different font as we ran out of time to change all the titles. 

The main purpose of our thriller opening is to establish the genre and character. our location isn't clear though. The intertextuality was very tightly fitted with the Black Swan and the dancing was extremely similar. 












As our IDENT was Candi Studios the audience can immediately establish that it is an independent low budget film. 

Seven uses lots of close ups which arouses the intrigue within the audience which is the effect we hope to cause as you cannot really establish the location or narrative from our opening. 

Audience feedback evaluation Question 6.

This feedback is from a group of contemporary film makers rather than our target audience which is 20-40 female. This means that the feedback might be more technical than you would expect from a regular audience.

This was the final edit of our thriller opening sequence, however we realised the titles are in the wrong order so we had to adjust them using Livetype.

Here is our rough cut of 'Victoria', sound is missing from the first half, so we will get that done by next week.

Second day of filming Victoria.

On our second day of filming our thriller opening 'Victoria' we managed to complete our whole opening. We filmed the first half, the ballet scene. All our shots were inspired by the Black Swan which Eleni recreated successfully. As Eleni has been dancing for a long time, we decided to use ballet pointe shoes to create a more dramatic and impress reaction from the audience. In contrast to our second half of the opening in the bedroom, all our shots in the dance section in the studio are mid shots, long shots but also a few close ups mainly of the ballet shoes. Same with the first day of filming anf editing, we have overlapped all our shots. (see image below)

Editing Victoria: Final Cut Pro.

Through out the weeks we have experimented with different techniques of editing, such as, overlapping shots to create a similar effect as the 'Seven' discrete opening. Below is a short clip from our thriller opening 'Victoria' in which 4 clips have been overlapped. A tracking shot of Eleni and the doll, a shot of Reem's hand opening the door, a shot of Eleni looking at the door as it closes and goes blank. We played with different effects, like fade in, fade out, cross dissolve and white flashes at the end, which create a suspenseful atmosphere. This scene is included in our opening.
